Van Duzer Summary

Introduction A Christian viewpoint of business is often viewed in positives and negatives, but in his book Van Duzer encourages us to think of business in a different light. Van Duzer prompts his readers to not focus on the worthiness or ethics of business but to focus on business matter in the first place. Van Duzer begins to create his reasoning for business on a vocational theology, which is defined by the creation story. Van Duzer goes on to makes six observations about the accounts of creations. “First, the material world matter to God; second, human being are called to steward God’s creation; third, Human beings are made in God’s image; fourth, human beings are made to live within limits; fifth, God delights in variety; sixth, the garden was …show more content…
These six observation that Van Duzer makes creates the purpose of why God made us, and how we are suppose to serve God on earth. Van Duzer acknowledges that our first calling to to Glorify God, but Van Duzer goes on to say that we all have a more specific calling that we need to answer to. He says, “we reflect God’s glory through nurturing our relationships with God and with one another…But we also glorify God by engaging in the work we have been called to undertake…” (pg. 38) I agree with Van Duzer on this point that our work can be used to glorify God. God has given each one of us specific talents and passions, and by fulfilling those talents and passion we are Glorifying God. Van Duzer goes on to tell us that in business our purpose is to serve, we should practice business that is sustainable, and we should support one another. I belly that Van Duzer is on that right track with this thinking. As Christian business people if we are able to do those three things in business I think we will be successful. In the last chapter in this book, Van Duzer goes into more detail about some of the more frequent question he has been ask like, profits, shareholders, how can I apply this book to my business and other

Several times when asked about my future vocation I have said business with the following question of, is it nondenominational? After saying no I hear that that is okay because we need people to support missionaries and churches. This is true in some aspects as I hope to be able to contribute monetarily, however I think a major point is missed in this. Becoming a secular businessman is not a lower calling than becoming a missionary. All Christians have been called to bring glory to God through all of their vocations, all of their actions.…

Pope Francis’ Encyclical letter ‘Laudato Si’ aims to bring light current destruction of our global creation. Christian anthropology gives an understanding of the human person, formed through interactions and relationships with others. Christians have formed these interactions to form relationships with creation. The Encyclical refers to the term ‘creation’ in a broader context, referring not only to human’s relationship with the environment, but with God and with neighbours as well.…
