They compromised and traveled by Railroads to Europe and ended up in Japan, where they lived for two and half years. They soon came back to New York but it was now three of them that came back as they had a son. Their son Karl Taro is two years older than Noah, the only thing the two boys seem to have in common is that they are related. Karl seems to be meeting his child stages, unlike Noah which seems to not progress. Josh and Foumi take Noah to his routine pediatrician visit but what they thought would be routine was more of a scare. Josh and Foumi expressed their concerned on how Noah did not hold his head up or rolled over on his own. They thought the doctor would just tell them it is nothing to worry about, but he asked further questions on Noah’s speech and playing habits. He soon suggested that if within three months Noah did not progress, they should take him to a specialist. In “Introducing Disability Studies” by Berger he mentions how women who found out they were having a child with Down syndrome would undergo abortion and those who did not and had the baby afterwards wished they had aborted better. In the 1960’s there was no testing done to know if the child was going to be born with down syndrome so most women had children with down syndrome, not knowing the actual definition of it. “Presumably there have always been people who had the sorts of neurology and behaviors we now label as autistic, but insofar as they were remarked at all, they were parceled out to different categories(most notably various forms of madness, especially schizophrenia, or “feeblemindedness”)(Davis pg. 460). Throughout the book Noah is not really diagnosed they just give guesses on his diagnosis like he is emotionally disturbed or having organic retardation, childhood schizophrenia and or autistic. Doctors did not know what really going on with Noah and some of them even believed that he would be cured one
