The book “A Child Called “It” was based on the author, Dave Pelzer’s abusive childhood. Dave Pelzer uses description, reflection and imagery to demonstrate to the audience what he went through and the courage he was able to possess as a child. The book shares his experience. His experience involved an insane alcoholic mother who treated her child as if he was non-human. She deliberately and intentionally tortures her child. She does not even consider Dave to be her child. Dave’s mother has the characteristics of someone who would be charged with attempted murder. Dave lived in a world where he cried out for help. Experts say in A Kansas City Star’s article called “It Isn’t Rare for Parents to Single out One Child for Abuse”, that there are many reasons why an abusive parent might target one child and that this situation is not uncommon (Bergen, 2012). I found this statement surprising. I had no idea that there were various reasons why some abusive parents choose one child to abuse from many siblings. I was under the impression that there could only be one underlying psychological problem. Studies say that many of the reasons for parents singling out children for abuse include having a child that is difficult to manage, having a child that has physical and medical needs, and or having a child that represents something negative to the parent (Bergen, 2012). These reasons can cause parents to get frustrated, angry, and possibly relive a trauma from their childhood eventually leading to abuse (Bergen, …show more content…
I am appalled by this type of abuse. Not that any other abuse case is any better, but singling out a child is heartbreaking. I can only imagine how that child feels and how the siblings feel for not being able to do anything and being separated from their siblings. The book A Child Called “It” has given me knowledge of this type of abusive. Through research and articles I was able to better understand the topic and see the relationship between various cases that were similar to Dave’s. A major difference was that most other children found in this situation were pronounced dead. Most children will not be able to have the same courage as

He was disciplined extremely different compared to others. Disciplining is not the correct term to use when describing what he endured, he was horrendously abused both physically and mentally. There is a great difference of discipline and what the author experienced. The words to describe this parental relationship is barbaric, crime, injustice, abusive, punishment, and authoritative. I feel that relationship is not the right term to use when describing the interaction between the author and his mother.…

Weeping in the Playtime of Others In reading Weeping in the Playtime of Others: America’s Incarcerated Children by Kenneth Wooden, I learned about the devastating, heartbreaking truths about how corrupt our juvenile legal system is. I knew there was probably some violence within the facilities, but I didn’t realize the extent of the torture and physical abuse the youth experienced within in the juvenile correctional facilities across America. I was shocked by the amount of youth that weren’t actually what we would consider criminals. These children were incarcerated because they were emotionally disturbed, mentally handicapped or because they ran away from home to escape a bad situation.…

I had been pondering this question for a while “how will my parents react when I tell them that I have decided to join the LDS church? The worst part of it all is that I didn’t ask permission to start speaking with the missionaries in the first place.” I was literally weighed down by fear as I crossed the threshold of my parent’s front door that evening. “I made this decision and I am willing to deal with the consequences,” I thought to myself. Somehow the brightly colored walls of the living room seemed dull.…

Children coming from hard places sometimes experience more trauma in their few years of life than some adults experience throughout their entire lives. Examples of trauma can be anywhere from sexual abuse, to living in poverty, moving from place to place, and even the death of a loved one. These traumas mold and shape the child emotionally and sometimes physically if the child as suffered neglect or physical abuse.…

After Julie became educated on Munchausen by Proxy she understood what was wrong with her mother. Because vulnerable people are the victims, MSB is a form of child abuse or elder abuse” (Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, 2014).…

What is the rediscovery of child abuse and why is it important? Children were only granted the same legal status as domesticated animals in regard to protection against neglect or cruelty in the 19th century. It took from 1962 through 1976 for “battered child syndrome” to be entered into the medical profession. Apparently, the confidentiality agreement about medical history between doctors, police, etc. was stopping the medical and criminal agencies from exposing the children who had been beat.…
