Experts say in A Kansas City Star’s article called “It Isn’t Rare for Parents to Single out One Child for Abuse”, that there are many reasons why an abusive parent might target one child and that this situation is not uncommon (Bergen, 2012). I found this statement surprising. I had no idea that there were various reasons why some abusive parents choose one child to abuse from many siblings. I was under the impression that there could only be one underlying psychological problem. Studies say that many of the reasons for parents singling out children for abuse include having a child that is difficult to manage, having a child that has physical and medical needs, and or having a child that represents something negative to the parent (Bergen, 2012). I am appalled by this type of abuse. Not that any other abuse case is any better, but singling out a child is heartbreaking. I can only imagine how that child feels and how the siblings feel for not being able to do anything and being separated from their siblings. The book A Child Called “It” has given me knowledge of this type of abusive. Through research and articles I was able to better understand the topic and see the relationship between various cases that were similar to Dave’s.
