A Character Analysis Of John Steinbeck's Freak The Mighty

Decent Essays
Freak the Mighty follows Max, a huge boy “without a brain” as he befriends a small Kevin, with an enormously large brain. They form an unbreakable bond and, along with some adventures, became FREAK THE MIGHTY. This book, had both positives and negatives concerning itself. For starters, it had good character development for Max however, there was terrible development for every other character. I felt emotional detachment to whatever was happening to the characters just because they weren’t relatable. Whenever action was happening, I was not on the edge of my seat as I should be, rather I felt boredom as the events going outside the character were not acutely described. The exception to these travesties is Max, as I was inside his head

Freak the Mighty, a book now recommended to classrooms around the world, is written by Rodman Philbrick, and takes place in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Maxwell is the main character, and the book is mostly about what he is remembering. Max is both dyslexic and illiterate, but is rather tall and strong for his age. Kevin, the other main character, suffers from Morquio Syndrome, a ridiculously rare and also rather dangerous form of dwarfism (earning him the nickname “Freak”, due to his bell-shaped chest and small height), although is very intelligent and is never afraid to display such knowledge. Kevin cannot walk very easily without assistance, but can crawl on all fours rather quickly.…

In the novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck, the author claims that someone can only deem other people good or evil based on their actions after they have died. People in society blindlessly judge those who are dead based on what they want to remember, not by what important actions were committed. John Steinbeck’s statement is not true, you can also look upon the deeds they committed during their lives and the way they affected the morals of people around them. Examples that could be reviewed based on Steinbeck's opinion would be in his novel East of Eden, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, and in the case of Bill Cosby in his dilemma.…

Inner journeys always provide a lesson, how one chooses to perceive will determine the outcome. A person cannot predict the end result of an inner journey as they are constantly evolving, a positive conclusion relies on ones capacity to provide themselves an enlightened understanding. The 2011 film The Candidate by David Karlak follows Burton Grunzer a self righteous individual in need of change and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, a children's story about Max, a young boy learning to control his temper. Both represent the idea of inner journeys as a process and both support the idea that it is self reflection that will determine the outcome of whether or not the journey is positive. All inner journeys will be understood differently,…

Max sits in the back of the class drinking tea, not paying attention to the class, reading a newspaper, and is eventually asked to answer the “hardest geometry question in the world”. He confidently walks up to the chalkboard, solves the equation, and is carried off by students as they cheer his name. Quickly, he returns to reality.
