The idea of being a midwife is being able to serve women and their babies the natural way. Midwives believe that hospitals are only for emergencies during childbirth. Since the idea that women are supposed to deliver their babies in a hospital became prevalent, midwives have not been able to continue their practice. The problem isn’t that midwives aren’t doing their job right, the problem is that midwifes are always facing the challenge of the rules and regulations changing on them so they aren’t able to keep up with them. In the 1990’s, when hospital births were at their highest, Midwives Alliance of North America “encouraged” midwives to only continue practicing with a nursing license, but when they didn’t their practices were shut down”(Undecided? Become a CNM). These women only knew what they had been practicing for 20 years and they believed that it was working just fine. To encourage the women in midwifery, the North American Alliances should hold a yearly seminar to help the women keep up with all the changing rules and regulations. This could keep a lot of problems from arising by midwives having their education continuously improving every year.
