Redshift: My Understanding Of The Big Bang Theory

Improved Essays
This past section has been very fascinating. I feel like I learned so many new things, and I realized that I know absolutely nothing about the universe. It has been cool learning new things, and also realizing that there is so much for me to learn, but also for mankind to learn in general, nobody really knows anything for sure when it comes to the universe. Overall what I have learned the most this semester include the concepts of redshift, the fact that the universe is expanding, how huge the universe is, and that the Big Bang theory is not as ridiculous as I previously believed it to be. Redshift describes how light changes as objects in space) move closer or farther away from us. Because on the light spectrum when things are moving away …show more content…
My previous understanding of the Big Bang Theory was that randomly, billions of years ago, elements in outer space all came together and happened to cause a huge explosion, and then everything just fit together perfectly, there were perfectly formed planets that orbited the sun, and conveniently everything fit together nicely. This idea of the Big Bang Theory really does not add up, and is not logical. Another reason I never thought much of this theory is because in every other science class I have been in, the teacher has always made it sound like you can either believe in God, or you can believe in the Big Bang Theory. So obviously, I have chosen to believe in God, and discarded the option that I could maybe have faith in God, and also think that the Big Bang Theory could be real. However, in the last class period, a student asked the teacher if he believed the Big Bang Theory to be true. Then our teacher responded, “absolutely.” He then gave us the chance to discuss any concerns that we have with the Big Bang Theory as a class. And every problem I saw with it I I came to realize was not something that disproved the theory, but it was a problem with my misinterpreting what the theory claims. So, while I still do not have a strong opinion on whether or not I think this theory is correct, I now am more open minded towards it and am able to acknowledge all of the evidence that points towards

The first day of school in 8th grade, I walked into my science class and Mr. Davis told everyone to get a sheet of paper to write on. The assignment was to write about the creation of the universe, Mr.Davis along with my Principal would be reading our papers to see our writing abilities at the beginning of the year, and then we would write the same paper at the end of the year to compare them. We had three options--the Big Bang Theory, The Oscillating Universe Theory, or The Accelerating Universe Theory... None of which, I believe in. I sat in my chair, staring at the blank sheet of paper, not knowing what to write.…

Another concept that changed my life is how dangerous everything in our universe is. At any moment, an asteroid could come zooming into our planet and everything we know could disappear. In section one of your book, a chapter is ended like this, “What are the lessons to be learned from this journey of the mind? That humans are emotionally fragile, perennially gullible, hopelessly ignorant masters of an insignificantly small speck in the cosmos. Have a nice day.”…

The Big Bang is how humans nowadays believe the earth was created based on scientific experiments and theories. The theory states that a singularity was created, which is a zone that defies our understanding of physics (The Big Bang Theory - An Overview, 2015). Eventually this expanded creating a viable universe for life. The universe is constantly expanding creating new stars and other spatial objects that are needed in the universe. Tiny micro organisms formed on Earth that over millions of years started to evolve and became more complex.…

What was your favorite overall activity? Why? My favorite activity was the sky coaster, even though I didn’t go all the way to the top, because I am scared of heights so it helped me with my fears and because it was so much fun when I got to drop and then swing from the cords that were holding me up. 2.…

This past Thursday we were placed into groups and asked to read Alan Lightman’s essay What Came Before the Big Bang. The Big Bang happened some fourteen billion years ago as a state of infinitesimally dense and small, superheated ball of matter, which has been expanding ever since. And as far as we know, the universe will keep expanding forever. What scientists are trying to figure out is if there was anything before the Big Bang, essentially, they are trying to figure out if time had existed before the creation of the Big Bang.…

Throughout this whole quarter, I would say that I have learned a lot in this class. Not only that I learned what is in the syllabus but also the importance of being able to apply my understandings on a problem. I believe that the instructor did a great job in addressing the learning outcomes in this class by helping us in understanding the concepts that we need to learn in order complete this course. One of the learning outcomes of this course is that each students should be able to describe, interpret and predict the propagation of energy via waves, using applied conservation of energy principles. Before this class, I have learned about the law of conservation of energy in PHYS221 with Micheal Greiner.…

Physics and basic science classes won’t cover the information about the sun, the moon or the stars and they way they interact with each other. It was shocking for me to learn that Harvard graduates didn’t know much about astronomy despite coming from a science background. It was probably just as shocking for the teacher to learn that her students had misconceptions about the way seasons occur and the reason why there are lunar phases. One student had said that the reason there are crescents is because there are clouds blocking the way. It made her realize that students come up with their own ideas before the teacher teaches them.…

Finally, a scientific theory is a hypothesis that is then supported by observations and explanations. It may be right, wrong, or even partially wrong. There are various evidences that support the Theory of Evolution and many others that prove it's opposite. Some people are against the theory, others believe and even added more and more ideas to it. There is no strong scientific evidence that proves that either side is 100% true and…

The argument for the existence of God I find those most interesting is the Cosmological argument. The Cosmological argument starts with the idea that everything in nature has an explanatory or sensible sequence. For these sequences to exist and be so efficient it must be concluded that something must have caused them and put them into place, a thing that was not just another part of nature or sequence. To fully sum up and conclude this argument it must be put together that a powerful force or even “God like” being must have implemented nature and all of its many sequences. This out of all the arguments makes the most sense.…

In Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s person narrative “Cosmic Perspective,” he illustrates to a diverse audience that humans are not insignificant to the universe, but a link in a never-ending chain; that chain being the cosmos. This in mind, one is called to question how essays like “In the Minimum Wage Debate, Both Sides Make Valid Points” and “Speaking While Female” should, or could, be interpreted and perceived through the cosmic perspective. To do so, one must have and understanding, no matter how small, of what Tyson was explaining. Tyson’s “Cosmic Perspective” was written to recondition how a phycologist perceived Tyson’s space show, “Passport to the Universe”. The phycologist said that he was experiencing “dramatic feelings of smallness,” making…

All have different views and opinions on the universe and the study of the cosmos. Some eagerly learn all they can about the universe, whilst others prefer to focus on the events right in front of them. The pros and cons to having a wide understanding and perspective of the universe vary depending on prior knowledge and opinions. While some would rather halt space exploration entirely, many still hunger and yearn to learn more about the universe around them. The human race needs to gain more knowledge of space with a new perspective to better understand their past, home, and universe.…

Others that believe in the Big Bang Theory will most likely believe that the universe was created by accident. “God created the universe out of nothing and made it in such a way that it operates with a uniformity of cause and effect in an open system.” (Note that the phrase “open system” means that God is able to work miracles in the created order, which would override the normal operation of cause and effect.)”…

I would say that I learned the most about what it really means to have time management after this semester. Entering my first semester of college I had blind faith in the University, and myself because I believe everything would just work out and I would pass because it was meant to be. However, fate and hope are no the things to help you life as a new college student. The drive to wake up, attend class, finish homework, and accept the new responsibility that had been placed in my novice hands diminished greatly as the non-academic temptations became to creep in my head. I must be honest with you and let you know that I did cave and willingly participate in the sweet release of social experiences.…

To this day stories, theories, beliefs, and much more have been created to simply satisfy our understanding on how the universe was created. Curiosity has been the key for all these definitions and through generations of humans many questions have been asked on the lines of How did our universe begin? How old is our universe? How did matter come to exist? However, these are very complicated questions that we to this day have no confirmed answer to but our history on this planet has lead to some clues that can possibly be the answer.…
