When I worked as a tutor at African Community Economic Development of New England (ACEDONE), I observed that there was poor access to health services within the Somali community. Many of them were not going for their annual physical and routine dental appointments due to lack of awareness, cultural, and language barriers to name a few. It is not something that affected my family solely, but rather my community as a whole. This motivated me to pursue a career in primary care. I choose primary care because of the variety of cases you get to see and the long life relationships you build with your patients.
