A Career In Medicine: Personal Statement

Improved Essays
Growing up, I was always surrounded by inspiring well-rounded people. My introduction into medicine came at an early age. My entire family line, including my parents, are all nurses and doctors. I have been inspired to take the medical route since I was a child. The most I knew about science was from the Magic School Bus and Bill Nye the science guy. Even though I knew little about that subject other than being surrounded by scrub suits all the time, I couldn’t see myself pursuing any other field than medicine. It wasn’t until high school that I gained a serious interest in a medical career. My passion grew as I engaged in much more rigorous, yet exciting classes. My decisions to take certain classes and join certain clubs in high school helped …show more content…
She believes the only way a person could succeed is to push themselves out of their own limitations. My junior year was the hardest year of my entire school career. I crammed my schedule with seven AP classes that consisted of: AP Environmental Science, Pre-AP Pre-Calculus, AP U.S. History, AP Physics AB, AP Statistics, AP Biology, and AP English. Just listing my junior year schedule gives me anxiety. On top of that, I was preparing for standardized tests in May. My regular bedtime suddenly turned from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on my good days. I became so overwhelmed that I decided to take a break from volleyball that semester. At some points, I felt like giving up when assignments became almost impossible. Luckily, I didn’t. I managed to find my purpose in every class and take advantage of the opportunities each had to offer. AP Biology and AP Physics were the classes that interested me the most. Somehow Mendel’s laws about genetics, the cellular processes of the biological systems, and conservation laws attracted me. I may not have been perfect in every single one of those classes, but I pushed myself to the best of my ability. I enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone and challenging myself. The sacrifices I have made to make good grades has taught me the discipline and the priorities I should focus on. Since I was capable of prioritizing my time and effort, I always had a clear vision of the importance of my

The study of medicine has evolved over thousands of years from something of an enigma governed by religious spheres to the highly specialized science of preventing, treating, and curing diseases of the human body. While my interest in becoming a physician did begin with a love of natural sciences, it has, like the study of medicine, evolved into something much larger than topics covered in my general biology courses. I want to work with people on managing their conditions, learn from doctors before me as well as patients, and be a positive influence despite often-negative diagnoses. Individuals all have different reasons for wanting to attend medical school, but I believe that we are either called to practice medicine or we are not. I am drawn…

It is said that you find your way while you are in college, but I actually lost mine, and it was the best thing to ever happen to me. When I was four years old, I decided that I wanted to be a doctor and everything I did from that day forward was geared towards enhancing myself to be the best physician I could be. After my first year of my undergraduate degree at Michigan State University however, I was terrified to find that science and medicine did not hold the same draw for me as it always had. I found myself with the same passion for changing people’s lives, minus the desire for treating illnesses and researching medical conditions.…
