A Career In High School

Improved Essays
As a Freshman at Jones College Prep, one of the top three most prestigious high schools in the state; I was part of the Career and Technical Education Program. This allowed me the opportunity to choose between the Engineering and Pre- Law programs provided at my school. My interest in math and science pushed me to pursue a path in Engineering. Knowing that I will be able to positively impact someone’s life through this career made it all the more compelling.
The “Introduction to Engineering” class on my first day of high school was intimidating. I knew I had to put my best foot forward for this challenging course. My teacher for my first year of Engineering, Mr. Trott, said to the class, “Look around. Count how many women you see in the room.”

Although I am currently in pursuit of a career as an engineer, I hope to retire early into a less demanding profession, so I can return to a small community such as my hometown and volunteer as a high school track and cross country coach. If I can share the same passion for the sport, which Coach Scannella shared with me, and alter at least one young person’s life in a positive manner, then I will be satisfied with my efforts. While my aspirations lie in the somewhat distant future, I have already taken steps to bring me closer to that point. One technical aspect of reaching this dream is to be able to advance my engineering career in a timely fashion, so I can achieve my personal goals and move on to this new pursuit. Thus, I have remained focused on my schoolwork throughout high school in order to prepare myself for the challenges that await me in college.…

While Eve Smith of Martha's Vineyard wasn't particularly poor growing up, she was raised while her mother was trying to make a name for herself in the news industry. Eve went from overcrowded public schools to some of New York's finest institutions between elementary and high school. Her goal was to break into the fashion industry, which she did have a talent in, and even in her freshman year of high school she garnered a reputation as a fierce opportunist and massive overachiever. This tenacity led to a steady 4.55 GPA throughout high school and MIT offering her a scholarship for her engineering science projects; she had no intention of becoming an engineer, but she reasoned that her technopathy paired with a good idea would win her awards. MIT's offers meant little to her, but a meeting with the illusive I. Ventura did.…

As a first generation student from a low income family, I aspire to pursue a career in engineering. Even though, it requires an enormous amount of math and physics experience, this did not mean that I had to give up my dream. In addition, since St Olaf does not have many engineering programs, I have decided to major in math. I am also going to take some physics courses, so it will help me later on when I go to graduate school for a master's degree in…

Third, research on African American women engineers is centered on those currently working as engineers while neglecting African American women engineering students. Fourth, research that relies on statistical analysis tends to have smaller numbers of African American females, making some of the conclusions drawn questionable when compared to the significantly larger numbers of White men and women. Some quantitative research articles attempt to oversample in order to remedy this problem; however, the numbers of African American female engineering students still pale in comparison to those of their White and male…

Growing up in rural Ghana, my school days were often interrupted with frequent blackouts. I grew tired of missing school and wanted to be an “electricity superwoman” who solved energy problems. I noticed that anytime the electricity had to be turned on, a male engineer showed up. I did not personally know any female engineers, and there was a common belief in my school that men were more competent in STEM fields. Whenever I told my friends and teachers about pursuing an education that would allow me to solve the blackouts, they would say, “That is a man’s job.”…

Women have opted out of both educational and career choices due to the prominent masculine images and the prevailing stereotypes which have been created surrounding femininity in engineering. The discourse has also provided a binary between femininity and masculinity in which females can be perceived as less able. In general, the ideas surrounding women in engineering is reflective of the males dominated jobs and broader gender ideologies. It is also implicated that the heteronormative binary between the two sexes suggests a divide in the skills and jobs for men and…

A large institution that leads women to not be involved in engineering is that of the education system as a whole. First off, at the engineering department faculty level, female faculty are extremely underrepresented. The ratio of male to female professors and lecturers is one of the lowest compared to other departments. Of University of Nottingham’s thirty-seven person civil engineering faulty only two are women (Wynne).…

The civil engineering industry remains one of the most male dominated sectors and women are under-represented. Much of the current literature describes the difficulties experienced by women who work in this sector including cultural and structural barriers, such as harassment and discrimination, limited networking opportunities and long and inflexible working hours which often result in poor career prospects and high levels of stress for women.
