A Career In Audiology

Decent Essays
Science and the human body has always intrigued me. The human body and the extent that it has for many miraculous processes which occur simultaneously simply caught my attention. This belief and enthusiasm originally led me into the field of Pharmacy. Eventually though, I gradually realised that it was honestly not the career path for me to follow. Although I relished and thoroughly enjoyed my studies of the subject, I found that my personality and the practice of the theoretical knowledge of the subject did not suit. Honestly I found the field of pharmacy to be more emotionless than I had first anticipated. Of course, my heartfelt interest in science and the human body has not subsided, in fact it has matured – but in a different direction to the first field I had interest in. I then instantly sought to find out what would really match my skills, persona and passion. It was actually a conversation with my grandmother’s doctor who is an audiologist that led me to the conclusion that the field of audiology was the perfect career for me. That conversation suggested everything I needed to know about becoming an audiologist and what it means to help people in need. I was suggested to research the field in a little more depth to actually learn what audiology is all about, but just observing the audiologist at work put everything into perspective. Incredibly I found the field of audiology more and more interesting and it occurred to me that audiology was closely suited to my personal skills.

These responsibilities taught me to make use of time and be more social. This environment was amazing to me because I had always wanted to understand how a pharmacy is managed. I was 13 years old when I had my first scientific epiphany. My high school biology class was studying the brain and that day we’d been taught that no new neurons formed during adulthood. I remember reading a copy of MIT's Technology Review magazine that night in my parent's living room. There was a short article about new research on neurogenesis: new neurons formed in some areas of the adult brain. At the time, I was not so much floored by the fact that new neurons formed in adulthood, but that even in the 21st century, there was still new discoveries to be made and that my textbooks still didn’t have it all quite right.…
