I had the great opportunity to help with the stitches for the deep laceration to the posterior part of the hand. I got to see how they used lidocaine injections to create various nerve blocks to help numb the area that is to be cleaned and sown up. I learned about the types of knots that were used to secure the stitches and the importance of counting how many sharps there was before and after the procedure. I actually assisted multiple times throughout my four days in the emergency department. I remember how obtaining a blood culture from the patient was so important. The laboratory values played an essential part in providing treatment for the patient. I never realized how much information these values truly reveal. The ER doctor informed me that the type of treatment the patient was going to receive from her, was fully dependent on what the girls’ lab values were expressing. The lab values had a direct coloration on the type of treatment. During this females stay, there were so many measures that were taken , such as administering an insulin drip and infusing with multiple lines of normal saline, and even the administration of a vasopressor. I got to see how the ER was able to collaborate with Children’s Mercy. The Children’s Mercy Critical Care Transport Team came down to stabilize the patient further and transport her to an pediatric intensive care unit
