A Career As A Residence Director

Decent Essays
While working as a Residence Director, I had the opportunity to work with a diverse student population, supervise, advise, monitor budgets, and implement programs to better serve students.
As a Program Coordinator, I teach a workplace course for the Master of Science in Public Health Program. The students learn leadership styles and how to work with others. I also work with organizations to place students at internship sites. I review resumes as well as providing interviewing tips, and job searching strategies. I strive to provide students with a healthy learning environment that will provide students with the tools to pursue their career paths.

My interest in being a resident advisor (“RA”) stems from my desire to work intimately, candidly, and meaningfully with other people. My most rewarding relationships have all been built upon some mutually meaningful connection, whether it arises from experiencing grueling football practices together, sharing a common set of interests with someone, or working with others to finish a challenging project. I see the RA position as a way to maximize my likelihood of making these meaningful connections with other individuals, those individuals, in this case, being my future residents and fellow RAs. However, I am not applying to this position for the sole purpose of making friends, and I appreciate that the role of the RA is not always that of a friend. Even so, enhancing the lives of other individuals, with or without a corresponding friendship, is sufficiently fulfilling in and of itself.…

No matter how small or how enormous the task, I would soon add the necessary human touch. In particular, I would, time and time again demonstrate that I truly care and my residents would soon discover that their university and residential experience is more than meaningful; it is also life transforming. I have a strong background of working with others in capacities both supervised and unsupervised. I earned a reputation among my supervisors and peers for ensuring satisfaction and if I commit an error, I own it and strive to do better; I would be delighted to supply a list of additional references upon request. In my first semester at TNS, I have admired the difficult work and interaction of our current RA’s and RD during my stay at Kerry Hall.…

My mother did not have the opportunity to graduate from high school or earn her GED because she had to work at a young age to help my grandmother in the Dominican Republic. Seeing my mother’s leadership, work ethic, and sacrifices gives me the fuel to one day have a better life by earning my Masters degree and making a difference in my community. I have always desired a career that will make a difference by targeting populations, highlight prevention methods, and one that will be a challenge. Prior to obtaining my MPH, I had the opportunity to intern with the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH) in the Environmental Health Branch program called the Chemical Hazards Program (CHP). I assisted the CHP staff by creating and maintaining a database from their Environmental Health Education Needs Assessment on a Superfund site investigation in relation to uranium in private well-water. The health data was then evaluated, recommendations were made, and, as a result, I co-authored the Environmental Health Education Needs Assessment Report which entailed details of the project/study.…

I chose to rework the syllabus of HED 750 (Student Services in Higher education) because numerous researchers have found the importance of student affairs professionals on campus diversity dialogue. Watt (2007) stated that student affairs professionals are the persons who may facilitate the discussion on diversity, so they should be aware of his/her own biases, values, and prejudices; understand the viewpoint of others; and develop skills “to develop appropriate intervention strategies and techniques” (p. 115). Furthermore, McClellan and Stringer (2009) supported this idea because student affairs professions guide students morally, educationally, and in terms of health especially mental health. In addition, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA, 2016) emphasized diversity on student affairs administrators and started to create opportunities and supports to help grow the understanding among student affairs professions. There are several changes that was made in the syllabus: 1.…
