A Career As A Medical Assistant Application Essay

While in Brazil on a mission trip to volunteer in schools with Saint Vincent College, I worked closely with the children in the favelas and visited their homes to better understand how they lived. Every house contained multiple families and in a one room basement lived the most loving family who changed my life forever. The youngest child in the family was only seven years old and he had more surgeries than years on earth. During his time he had lost his legs and right arm but never his spirit or smile. I had never seen so much strength in a person and the way his mother talked about his medical care and how much it did for them as a family struck me. I realized that I would have never met this boy if he had never received the care he did and he would have never had been so strong without the people who helped him live. Working in the hospital as patient transport I see all the sides of healthcare. I am with the patients as they get admitted, go through testing, after surgery and recovery, and finally being discharged and sent back to live their lives. Throughout their journey I see fear, pain, exhaustion, and joy in all the stages and do my best to be there for them though all the emotions. I work alongside many healthcare professionals and the most meaningful interactions I see, in my opinion, are between the physician assistants and the patients. Physician assistants are there every step of the patients diagnosis, treatment, and healing and through this involvement they change the patients’ lives. For me nothing would be more rewarding than becoming a physician assistant and providing care to patients so that they may live their lives to the fullest, just like the young boy in
