“…Over the past decade, the science of happiness has received a fair bit of attention, because, of course, everyone would like to be happier, and probably more now than ever because studies show modern living is depressing” (Tosin Thompson, New Statesman “The pursuit of happiness”). In Malcolm Gladwell’s TED talk, “Choice, Happiness, and Spaghetti Sauce,” he discusses the reasons why having choices will allow people to be happier. Gladwell explains that when you do have the option to choose different products there is no such thing as a bad product, but a choice for someone else. He also describes that when you go to restaurants there is always a certain way a dish should be made and that no other way was right. Gladwell uses this analogy to…

John Krumboltz’s Happenstance Learning Theory discusses that human behavior is the result of different learning experiences made available by both planned and unplanned situations in which human beings find themselves. Since no one can know in advance the destiny or outcome of an individual’s decision, Krumboltz used the Happenstance Learning Theory as an attempt to explain why individuals follow certain career paths in life and how counselors can use this theory to guide their clients through this process. The Happenstance theory explains that every situation (planned or unplanned) is a potential opportunity for someone, as long as they are open and willing to capitalize on these moments. In my own life, I can look back and see where Happenstance…

I am sure we have all heard it before, that for a career find something that you love to do day in and day out. Teachers preach it, parents push for it, but is it the best path to try and navigate in a time when finding a job is tough and competitive, perhaps more so than ever? According to an essay by Boston based writer Carl McCoy, this is not the best advice to give to recent graduates of College. In his essay “Dear Grads, Don’t Do What You Love”, McCoy begins by saying that even when recent College graduates do find work, it is often low paying and does not have a long-term outlook of prosperity.…

On my first day shadowing, I met my mentor, Bill Kalp, and toured the plant. He explained the entirety of the plant from the intake pipe in the river pulling the water up, to when it is distributed to the community.…
