A Career As A Child Psychiatrist

A career in children psychology is something that has peaked my interest. Child psychologists deal with childhood development; children struggling with behavioral, developmental, and emotional problems. The common age of patients are 12 years old or younger. Sometimes adolescents are also in this group. Child psychologist will have to do psychological evaluations on a child which can be difficult since children usually have short attention spans. Not only will child psychologists have to interact with children and their parents but may also have to work with the child’s teachers, school counselors, school administrators, and other health care professionals. Psychiatrist is a physician who works with prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, addictive, and emotional disorders. While looking this career up, I found numerous specialties. Addiction psychiatrists, forensic psychiatrist, and neuropsychiatrist are just a few specialities. To be able to be a psychiatrist, a person has to have a M.D. or a D.O. degree from an accredited school of medicine. A medical degree that is needed takes about four years. Then a person must do a residency in psychiatry which can be anywhere from 3-4 years. Another references I found listed 12 years of schooling that included a Bachelors degree that takes 4 years, medical school that takes 4 years, residency takes another 4 years. All together, 7-12 years of schooling is needed before a person can become a psychiatrist. One thing a psychiatrist can do that most other’s can’t in psychology is administer drugs to clients. A psychiatrist can specialize working with children or older adults, work in medical schools teaching or research, in a medical clinic, a hospital or even a private practice.
