If you’re like the rest of us, you have probably spent hours watching Facebook videos of Manny the French Bulldog and Tillman the English Bulldog. In doing so, you may have concluded that your family is not complete without a bulldog. But which bully breed is right for you? At first glance, size seems to be the only difference between these flatulent, flat faced fiddos, but looks can be deceiving.

Being even-tempered and patient, they can tolerate the hugs and tea parties of even the most rambunctious toddlers, having a blasé’ attitude towards being dressed up in tutus and tiaras. English Bulldogs are also known for their love of strangers, especially those that come bearing treats. Many English Bulldog guardians have questioned their pet’s loyalty due to their eagerness to befriend just about anyone. If you’re looking for a watchdog, then the English Bulldog is not the dog for you as he is more apt to give any intruder a tour of your home.
In general, the French Bulldog tends to be territorial and possessive. For these reasons, they are not known for their tolerance of small children; thus, doing better with a more mature household. They tend to develop a strong bond with their guardians and if left alone for long periods of time, can develop separation anxiety. A short walk around the block can be enough exercise to warrant a nap. They are a stubborn breed, so training of any kind can be difficult and frustrating. In a battle of wills, you are not going to win. English Bulldogs suffer from “peter pan syndrome”, meaning they are perpetual puppies and may never outgrow chewing up your shoes or eating the arm off your sofa.
French Bulldogs require minimal exercise but they do love to play. Most French Bulldogs do what is aptly called the “Frenchie 500”, where they run circles around the house. They too are a stubborn breed, making training a challenge. At around 18 months, a French Bulldog will begin to move out of puppyhood and any destructive chewing behavior should wane.
