    1. Jonathan Maberry, the author of award-winning book Rot and Ruin, writes this story in a very eye-captivating way including interesting character development and plot through the theme of “Sometimes you have to be the change you want to see”. The story starts off with the protagonist, Benny, hating his brother, Tom, for his cowardly appearance in his first memory of his parents and the zombie-infested, ruin, outside of the encumbrance of the fence. As the story progresses Benny must find a job or he will lose the slim food rations he has. Peter Novick creates a narrative looking at the approach that has been used over the course of American history looking at professional historiography. Specifically, he looks at the idea of objectivity and its development in America, as well as the contrast of development of the idea in other places. For Americans, objectivity was the basis of their practice. It began so by the development of a certain cadre of historians taught in Germany and perpetuated by them when they returned to the American system. Leopold von Ranke to them was the definition of what a historian should be, describing him as an objective and impartial figure dislocated from bias.…

Simak plays with the characters he’s created not only for the plot but to also usher his theme upon the reader. The protagonist of the story, Kent Fowler, is portrayed as a fairly normal guy although he has a level of status and another character even says “Some day you will be a great man…” (Simak 3). Despite this he will eventually choose to leave his human form behind, this is another finger pointed towards the antihumanism theme. Towser, a reoccurring character in Simak’s stories and Fowler’s faithful canine sidekick, can also be viewed as another tool to get this theme passed along to the readers.…
