In “The Things They Carried,” by Tim O’Brien, each soldier stated what the war has done to them in order for their past to conclude the meaning of the book as a whole. He, O’Brien, speaks about how he was in war in the past, his connection with it and how it affects his personal life. O’Brien states, “I survived, but it’s not a happy ending, I was a coward. I went to to war” (61) to give the direct knowledge that he went to war and got through it with challenges at the end. The bad ending brought an effect to his personal life by having that feeling where he feels like he’s lost himself.
