• The kiranas continue: The very first challenge facing the organized retail industry in India is competition from the unorganized sector. Traditionally retailing has recognized in India for centuries. It is a low cost construction, mostly owner operated, has negligible real estate.
• Retail not being recognized as an industry in India: lack of credit as an industry obstructs the availability of finance to the existing and new players. This affects growth and development plans
• The High cost of real estate: Real estate prices in some cities in India are between the highest in the world. The lease or rent of property is one of the major areas of spending. A high lease rental decreases the profitability of a project.

• Increase in the number of working women: Today the women are qualified and literate. They have to maintain a balance between home and work. The purchasing habit of the home maker is different from the working women.
• Value for money: Organised retail deals in high level of value for money and the customers able to enjoy economies of large scale production and distribution. They eliminate intermediaries in distribution channel. Organised retailers offer quality products at reasonable prices. Example: Big Bazaar and Subhiksha.
• Emerging rural market: Now a days the rural market in India is facing a huge competition in retail sector .also rural market in India is the fast emerging as the rural consumers are becoming quality aware.
