Independent Collegian Reflection

The organization that I showed the most interest in for this assignment was The Independent Collegian Newspaper. My High school that I graduated from, unfortunately, did not have a newspaper to be apart of, and when I found out about this organization on campus, I knew that it would be a great experience that I could learn a lot from. I’ve always had a passion for writing, and I figured that this would be a great opportunity to learn about the process of creating and publishing a newspaper. I was informed a lot about the newspaper through a representative that visited my communications class along with a weekly writer’s workshop that would be held every week within their office. The Independent Collegian is a student-run newspaper that covers …show more content…
In order to balance my work life, school life and the newspaper, I’ve realized that I must take the time to organize my schedule and dedicate as much time as possible to each. I try to do much of my homework and studying during my spare time of the school week, and then work on interviews and putting together stories after work on the weekends. At the first meeting I attended for the writer’s workshop, I was able to meet other staff members of the paper along with students that possessed great interest in newspaper writing. I was very surprised to discover that one of them happened to be a science major that wanted to incorporate journalism and writing into this career field. This showed me that it doesn’t particularly matter what major you are declared as or what you want to study in the future, writing will always be a vital skill for someone to have under their belt. Although some fields may not be extremely dedicated to writing, there is always a time when writing will be utilized and possessing good writing skills will always allow someone to excel.
Overall, I believe that being apart of this great organization of people will allow me to tremendously improve my communication and writing skills along with my overall confidence. It will allow me to learn about the communications field and help me determine what would be an ideal career for me after I graduate from college. I also think that this will be one of the ultimate opportunities for me to get more involved on the campus along with expanding my connections and meeting unique and special groups/individuals within the

My interest in journalism stems from my role as editor of my school’s publication, the Boxer Roundup, a page of articles written by students about what is going on in our high school. The page is published every Thursday in our city’s newspaper, The Enterprise. I have been writing for the Boxer Roundup since sophomore year and have been an editor since last summer. By writing for and editing the Boxer Roundup I aim to highlight the positives that take place in my city and to help erase the view of the city as just a hotspot for crime and poverty. As a journalist, I hope to be able to bring to light the stories of those that may be overlooked and provide a factual account of events.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Introductory Guide In the first work of my choosing, I describe my "Campus Connections," a written assessment of a campus activity that I chose to participate in and then write about. While I felt that my first draft of this essay was good, it came to my attention that I was missing the "wow factor" that would draw the reader in to my story. Using the peer reviews of my class, I revised my final draft into the following paper. I then took notes on my teacher's requirements of what the paper should look like.…

In Honors Colloquium, I feel that what is working best is the way in which we are broken into groups. I feel that if it was attempted to teach the class as a whole and discuss as a whole not much would ever be covered. Mainly, due to not many people would participate and many would know that they could just brush off the class. However, in our groups, everything is more interactive and engaging. We are also expected and held to a standard of being prepared and ready to discuss reading in class, whereas in other classes you can get by without participating.…

In general, I am very satisfied with our project and the progress of learning as well. In my heart, each of us makes a lot of contributes to this whole project of Independent Study. First of all, I finish the brainstorm alone after the first week because we did not find the creative topic in the first class. I put forward some questions of time management to my partner after doing some research about the phenomenon that people relied on the phones and hard to manage their time. after we identified this topic, I found one of the most effective time management methods, Pomodoro Technique as the scientific basis of our app.…

The unique element of public relations writing is that it is the attempt to establish positive relations between an organization and its various publics. Other forms of writing, such as journalism, documentaries and fiction are not meant to leave the public with a positive image. While, they can have a positive effect they are used to tell stories, to express one’s opinion and to tell one-side of a story. Writing for public relations focuses on using a written platform to communicate a message. Three activities the class did this semester to showcase public relations writing were when we wrote an issue statement for the allegations surrounding Corey Lewandowski, when we wrote press releases about an upcoming event happening for the student…

A person is a unique being with various characteristics that makes up oneself, such as handwriting, interests, beliefs, and aspirations. These built-in components are like fingerprints, with no one’s prints being identical to another. If we did not have differences, society would mirror a dystopic society, like the way Big Brother watches over Winston Smith in George Orwell’s, Nineteen Eighty-Four. For example, everyone were duplicates of each other, having the same rationale, beliefs, as well as thoughts (Orwell, 1949). Thus, it is essential that people have their differences, no matter how subtle nor radical, in order to keep harmony within the democratic society we employ today.…
