The main point on opposition comes from the principle of beneficence (doing good). A patient who chooses to kill them self is fundamentally going against everything that the health care system stands for. They also argue that a person who is suffering from chronic illness will have some mental impairment, whether it is intense depression or anxiety (P. 276). All and all, Rich and Butts (2004) adds a balanced and practical two sided argument for and against PAS. They reiterate that "rational suicide is a morally ambiguous issue" (P. 277). For the patient it is another option. An option that should be explored if need be. In order to do this the health care team will need to be well educated in the manner. The individuals of the health care team must also leave their own beliefs on the subject at the door. Once the patient has the correct information they will decide on their own. On the other hand, this should not downplay the amount of emotional investment that members of the health care team will face in these tough decisions. Even though they should not sway a patient one way or another, more research would help those assisting in these processes by giving them more background for each individual
