I interviewed Barbara Anderson CPA and President of Franciscan Alliance – St Anthony’s Hospital Crown Point, Indiana. Barb has been held a president positon at a Franciscan Alliance (FA) hospital since 2006. Prior to becoming a President she was a Chief Operating Officer for a FA facility. Up until March of 2015, I reported directly to Barb as her Vice President of Operations. Barb and I have had numerous human resources challenges, issues, and successes ranging from very difficult reductions in workforces to hiring and terminating staff for various positions. At one point, we operating the hospital without a director of HR so she and I would attempt at managing the HR functions until we could secure the appropriate candidate for the position. This was an extremely difficult time and allowed us the opportunity to appreciate the value and skill set a well-trained HR director brings to the operational aspect of the organization. In my interview with Barb, she shared with me a few of her most challenging HR experiences. The one experience we discussed at great lengths was when the hospital was privately owned by physicians as a-for profit entity and did not have enough money to fund payroll. Barb was forced to hold her own paycheck plus ask the management team to not cash their check until the following week.
