When I play I try and put myself in his shoes and see things through his eyes. Lou Gehrig was a great man and he cherished life and the game. Without baseball he would have given up on himself a long time ago. I use his story to influence many decisions in my life today. Lou Gehrig will always be my role model because of the life he lived and how he lived it. This man was afraid of nothing. He showed his love for the game every time he stepped up to that plate, or even if he was just watching someone else play. One day I hope to accomplish just as much as he did. As a child I would read books about him all the time. I would force my older siblings to come throw me pitches just to practice my swing.
When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I would smile and simply reply, “The next Iron Horse." I practiced every day and anytime I could. I became a "baseball-aholic” and I refused to stop until I was at least half as good of a player as Lou Gehrig. Baseball was in my genes and his story had ignited a hunger that couldn 't be quenched by being almost as good or a decent ball player.
