Personal Narrative: My Process Of Writing

Improved Essays
During this semester, I have drastically changed as a writer. Either from how I write or my process of writing. Some of the best advice I got this year was from our conference over the literacy narrative. When you recommended using multiple shorter sentences rather than have my paper full of long and run on sentences. In my first essay, I wrote, “My grandpa is a hardcore conservative, born and raised in Alabama, spent most of his life there, also serving in the military, while he is now an overweight eighty-year-old man who doesn’t look a day over sixty, despite his grey hair.”. This could have been broken down into multiple sentences rather than just one long sentence. Whereas in my argument paper I say, “Jim Harbaugh, the football coach for …show more content…
I did enjoy writing some of my papers, especially my evaluation essay over the film Inglorious Basterds. If I am writing on subject that I care about then it is a lot easier for my writing to flow and not get stuck after every sentence or thought. By far writing the evaluation essay was my favorite. I got to just analyze scenes of the film and write about it. Personally my favorite part of the essay was talking about the opening scene of the movie. “Tarantino starts keeping a single camera and drags it to each character throughout the dialogue. This camera work captures the intense atmosphere given off by Hans”. Not only did I get to write about one of my favorite scenes, but I got to talk about how much the directing influenced it rather than the actors’ phenomenal performances. Regardless as to if I am passionate about my paper I still have extreme trouble starting my paper. Even though I love the film Inglorious Basterds and have seen it more times than I can count, I did not know how to start my evaluation over it. I took so long trying to figure out how to start. Despite finding subjects that are more natural for me to write about I still procrastinate writing my papers and still get lost trying to start …show more content…
That was my most personal essay because of how close I am with John and his family. In that paragraph, not only was it the most casual paragraph I’ve ever written but, I also used proper dialogue that for the first time I felt flowed. Just in the second sentence I gave John a voice, “Haha, I tried to get my dad one of those.”. While still being able to continue with the paragraph. I quoted John throughout my paper while not losing track of the profile. In my profile essay, I had dialogue that didn’t seem out of place, unlike my literacy narrative. In the opening scene, I wrote, “’So what, he has experience in running and managing a business.’ My grandpa said. My grandpa is a hardcore conservative”. To me writing that dialogue was not only harder to me but also felt choppier. My dialogue in my profile essay was a lot

I started writing then because of a troublesome past, both my mother and my father had left my two other siblings and I all alone, leaving us with our uncle. It was very hard for me to adjust, I was fatigued and emotionally hurt, I turned to writing. My love for writing grew into a bigger part of my life when I kept dream journals.…

Unless I have a very strict and short deadline, my writing process begins with thinking and reading about the topic or subject matter of my paper. I don’t do a structured free writing or idea mapping session, but rather just read a bit to get familiar with the subject matter and to get my brain thinking about the subject. Once I am ready to begin writing. I start with the thesis statement is on the topic, is formatted correctly, and matches the purpose of the essay.…

Becoming the writer that I am today, was not completely a single bound but rather several small steps. My family has greatly influenced- both positively and negatively- my development as a writer. I have also had the immense privilege of having several amazing teachers over the course of my education. Though, my development as a writer has been most deeply impacted by the division between my personal and academic writing styles and goals. I grew up in Bakersfield, California which is a conservative hotspot in one of the most reliably liberal states in the United States.…
