Jamaica is also known for its tourism; the white sandy beaches, the tasty dishes- ackee and salt fish, jerk chicken, jerk pork, and reggae music. It is the home of Usain Bolt (the Olympian track star) and the late, great Bob Marley. It is said that the island boasts “a very rich and vibrant history”. It is a testimony to oppression, steadfastness, growth, and the strong will of its inhabitants. It is the third largest Caribbean island and was originally inhabited by Arawak Indians. I am also from a Caribbean island, The United States Virgin Islands, however we are a U.S. territory and Jamaica is under British power. That alone gives you an idea of the differences we can hold. Though Jamaica is of British power it was not completely different from the United States.…

The Disney movie Pocahontas offers the viewer a stark portrayal of how Englishmen viewed Indigenous American tribes upon their arrival to the United States. The movie features a song titled Savages where Pocahontas and her fellow Powhatan tribespeople are described by the English settlers as “barely even human” and “dirty shrieking devils”. In reality, the first European explorers had much more diverse accounts of their experiences with indigenous peoples in North and Central America. To accurately evaluate early settlers interactions with American tribespeople, the works of Christopher Columbus, Cabeza de Vaca, and John Smith will be examined. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who landed in the Caribbean islands after a two month…

Google launched its fast Internet service in Kansas City in 2012, the Web giant said it wanted to spread broadband widely and close the "digital divide. " The survey, in six low-income Kansas City, Mo., neighborhoods, found that just 10% of residents subscribe to Google's Fiber service. The results suggest that the digital divide is less about where broadband service is offered -- the subject of fierce debate when Google first arrived in Kansas City -- and more about who finds it useful and can pay for it. For years people dint have the Internet, so now when it is available they question the need to have it. (124…

In 1492 Columbus said in his journal, “The islands are all extremely verdant and fertile, with the air agreeable, and probably contain many things of which I am ignorant, but I did not want to stay here, but visit other islands in search of gold.” This talks about how Columbus knew how valuable the islands of the Caribbeans were but yet he moved on because his mind was so set on gold. The greediness the Spaniards had gave them motivation to press on and take over more lands in hopes of finding gold. In 1590 Father Bernardino de Sahagun said, “And when they went into the great palace, the residence of the ruler, they repeatedly shot off their harquebuses. They exploded, sputtered, discharged, and thundered.”…

Although Columbus believed this land was the Indies, the land was actually the present-day Bahamas.…

Regarded as a hero of American history for “discovering the new world,” Christopher Columbus never actually set foot on North America. Mooring his ships to land he suspected to be Asia in 1492, Columbus’ discovery was a chain of islands in the Western Atlantic, today known as the West Indies, several hundred miles off the southeast coast of what is modern day Florida. In fact, of the four voyages he made across the Atlantic, he never traveled any further north than the Bahamas. Discoverer is an accurate word when referencing Columbus, but it is an inaccurate description. Using only this one landfall to build a character portrait for the man is unjust, the legacy of his impact should be examined on a global scale.…

His letter exhibits the many precious riches that one of the islands contains he states, “there are many spices and great mines of gold and other metals” (Letter to King Ferdinand (1493)).
