There are numerous treatments available for those diagnosed with atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Most widely known is the daily aspirin; it is recommended that all patients with documented CAD be treated with a daily aspirin (Boudi, 2015). Treatment of angina and prevention of acute cardiac symptoms includes various medications such as: nitrates, beta-blockers, statins, calcium channel blockers, and ranolazine, which inhibits the sodium current of the cardiac action potential (Boudi, 2015). For individuals who have already experienced a cardiac event or have documented atherosclerosis, treatments include: Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors to reduce blood pressure, antiplatelet agents such as heparin and clopidogrel, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors or statins to lower cholesterol such as Lipitor and Crestor, fibric acid derivatives such as fenofibrate, bile acid sequestrants, Vitamin E, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Lipid lowering treatments help to stabilize vulnerable plaques by inhibiting the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (Boudi, 2015). More invasive surgical procedures used are: coronary artery bypass grafts, percutaneous coronary intervention, partial ileal bypass, coronary angiography, and saphenous vein graft. Controversial chelation therapy uses intravenous ethylenediametetraacetic acid or hydrogen peroxide to bind to calcium in the plaque deposits and remove it from the body (Boudi, 2015).
