CHEMICALS AND PARTICLES There is almost an immeasurable amount of chemicals in the air that make up the air quality in the United States. Many of these toxins are discharged many sources that range from large manufacturing buildings to small purchased goods. The EPA or the “U.S. Environmental Protection Agency” has spent numerous years trying to figure out how to reduce or control the amount of pollutants being released into the atmosphere. (Smith, 1998) The one term used to define this cocktail of chemicals is PM or “particulate matter”, which are microscopic particles found in the atmosphere that have been identified as a cause of illness. There are different measurements of PM based on their diameter. There is “course” PM that has a very small diameter of 10μm, which can be dust …show more content…
In fact, citizens can pollute their soil in unexacting ways. Soil in urban regions has been a growing issue, due to the amount of contaminants that are found in this soil. (Hough, 2007) Soil contamination can happen in an abundance of ways. For example a chemical leak can seep into the ground, settling dust from a factory pumping out solid particles from their chimneys, and oil spills. These are only a few ways that soil can be contaminated, but not only that, these pollutants can “physically or chemically” combine to the soil. Then when plants are planted, the plant’s roots will suck up the pollution as a form of nutrients, which in turn, cause illnesses when eaten or even touched. Intake of polluted soil has shown signs different cancers, deficiencies, and “parasites” found in the human
