Definition and a Brief History of Bluetooth Technology Bluetooth is defined as “a short-range wireless technology” which is built into many devices that are commonly used today such as desktop and laptop computers, keyboards, and mobile phones to name a few (O’Brien & Marakas, 2011, p. 249). Bluetooth technology allows users to share different types of information wirelessly between paired devices. Bluetooth Technology was created by a group of engineers at Ericsson in 1994. The name Bluetooth originated from the 10th Century Danish King, Harald Blåtand or Harold Bluetooth in English. The King helped bring together fighting parties in the areas now known as Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. How Bluetooth Technology Works Bluetooth Technology is a combination of hardware and software. Products that contain Bluetooth have a small computer chip, which houses the Bluetooth radio.
