Roosevelt also had a thirst for learning, and studied with private tutors, traveled through the Middle East and Europe with his family, and also studied multiple different subjects when he attended Harvard. The Rough Riders fought in the Spanish-American War and were especially known for charging straight up towards the San Juan Hill at the battle of Santiago. When Roosevelt returned home from the war, he was seen as a war hero and was extremely popular to the public.
Not only did Roosevelt gain popularity from the public, he also had Republican leaders interested in him. People ended up convincing him to run for governor of New York and he won. Although he was popular to many people, some party officials did not want him to be re-elected as governor, and came up with a plan to have him nominated as U.S. Vice President in 1900. Roosevelt easily won his position for Vice President, but in less than a year, Roosevelt became president of the United States after McKinley was shot and passed
