Short Biography: Pina Bausch

On July 24, 1940, Philippine, Pina, Bausch was born in Solingen, Germany. She was the third child of Anita and August Bausch. The Bausch family owned a café, which was connected to a hotel. By helping out in the family business, Pina was able to watch people and notice the emotions in them, and most importantly-the factors that drove people to do certain things. Pina was in Essen, Germany when she began dancing. At the age of 14, she attended Folkwang University of the Arts. One of the choreographers at Folkwang was Kurt Jooss. With the school located in Germany during World War 2, Jooss was instructed to dismiss the Jewish students from the academy but he refused. Her first award was won in 1999, which was the Praemium Imperiale. She has also won other awards such as the Goethe Prize and Laurence Oliver Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance. She also has a foundation dedicated to her legacy today called the Pina Bausch Foundation. Their mission is to keep Pina’s legacy alive for future dancers or choreographers.
Pina Bausch was married to Rolf Borzik, who died in 1980 due to leukemia. Borzik was responsible for designing the dancer’s clothes and stage. Pina put on a piece called 1980 in remembrance. Pina later remarried to Ronald Kay, a Chilean professor. One year later, they had a son together. His name was Ralf-Salomen. Pina’s happiness in a remaking of a family and a new start in her relationships seemed to show in her dance pieces in later times such as Danzon in 1995. Pina Bausch died on June 30, 2009 at the age of 68 due to cancer. The Folkwang Ballet would be renamed Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch in her memory and honor. Pina remodeled the way of dance because of her distinctive dance moves and the way she presented dance. She placed ballet and theatre together with her pieces.
