Unlike the dystopian worlds in Brave New World and The Giver, our lives are not predestined. In Brave New World, the novel begins at the “Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre.” Here, the Director is explaining to touring children how each individual is created. Not only is everyone created scientifically through surgically removed ovaries; each individual is also induced with different treatments that allow them to become who they are. Within this world, there are five distinct castes: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. The Director explains how each fetus undergoes different treatments depending on his/her caste. For the three lower castes (Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon), they undergo treatments requiring oxygen deprivation and alcohol. These treatments are said to lower the intelligence of each fetus, in which they will not have the knowledge to do upper caste jobs that the Alphas and Betas can participate in. In addition to these treatments, Delta babies are set in front of books and flowers and then they are given “a mild electric shock” (21). Once seen, the Director explains to the children, “They’ll be safe from books and botany all their lives” (22). As a result, they will remain on track of their predestined lives of working in factories. Moreover, lives are also predestined in The Giver.
