Throughout my senior year in high school I have read a multitude of books in class and independently. I have read A Brave New World and Streetcar Named Desire in class with my peers. Independently I have read the book Gifted Hands by Ben Carson. Most of these books were related to me directly and others were related to general world and society around me.
The book Gifted Hands is a great way for me to gain knowledge about the medical field and how to work hard to gain admission into medical school. He discusses his hardships and the difficulties he went through to become a world class neurosurgeon that performed some of the world’s most

He would often fail many classes and would be made fun of as the stupid student in class. He started to become more arrogant as a child and this eventually lead to his mother teaching him how study hard and cutting down on television. Ben Carson had a tough childhood and was not smart at a young age. His mother often times had to push him to study and once Ben got the hang of it he was off. Ben’s grades started to increase and he was slowly by slowly becoming smarter and at the end of 8th grade was at the top of his class for academics. During the presentation of this award, one of the teacher’s made a racist comment over the microphone and this got me thinking about racism back then. Ben Carson had gone to a primarily white school and there was a lot of racism. This hardship made it difficult for him to succeed in school. After realizing and seeing the hardships that Ben Carson went through, the hardships that I go through is nothing compared to him. He had overcome many obstacles because he was determined to achieve his goal of becoming a neurosurgeon. He gave me inspiration to work hard and push myself and reach for my dream. In this entry I read a different part of the book and therefore I am creating a new post. Ben Carson went through many obstacles growing up and similarly I am considered fortunate compared to him and therefore should have the capability of achieving equal or more than he did. Ben Carson attended Yale University and went on to attend the University of Michigan Medical school. I am in a similar place in my life where I have to choose a college to attend and then pursue a major and a career. Ben Carson worked exceptionally hard during his undergraduate years to achieve where he is today. I want to work as hard as Ben Carson did in college and make sure to fulfill my goal of becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon. Ben Carson worked tirelessly at Yale to get a place at Michigan School of Medicine and worked even harder to become the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Ben Carson is one person I look up to and as I was reading this book it hit me multiple times that I should be working as hard as he did so I can achieve my goals. Nothing in life comes for free. We have to work effortlessly toward everything we want to achieve. In order to work

This shows stark contrast to the lacking of opportunities faced by Chris Langan. Later in the book, Gladwell compares the financial issues from Langan to the exceedingly accessible funds of Robert Oppenheimer, and how the tables could have turned if the scenarios were opposite. Langan's brother contributes to Gladwell’s beliefs as he states "'If Christopher had been born into a wealthy family, if he was the son of a doctor who was well connected in some major market, I guarantee you he would have been on of those guys you read about", referring to all the other socially known geniuses (Gladwell, 23). It is well known in today’s society that people with money can buy their way to success, but these people are not the ones who have truly earned their success, rather the ones who bought the title. It is the people who have worked and spent numerous hours to their dedicated field who are the ones who contribute to the traditional idea of success.…
