A Brave New World Analysis

Decent Essays
A common theme between A Brave New World and an article titled “Drugs aren't solving mental illness” is that the use of drugs or other medications to calm the mind are only causing more harm than improvement in patients. In the article it is asserted by Dr. Insel, “Four decades of drug development resulting in over 20 antipsychotics and 30 antidepressants have not demonstrably reduced the morbidity or mortality of mental disorders,” therefore it has been scientifically proven that the intake of prescription medication to fight depression or psychiatric problems have not showed any results positive for the patient. Similarly, in the novel it is portrayed that “soma” has the same ability of drugs and alcohol without the side effects of hangovers

Medication, the modern miracles, have been one of the most over and misused items in our society. Medication was created so that countless lives could be saved, not destroyed. Nowadays, people use medicine for everything and some may even use Advil as poison. In Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, he takes a glimpse into the future and shows how people are even more reliant on drugs to get them through their day. In this not-so-fictional society, people overdose of sleeping pills regularly just so they don’t have to feel their “bad emotions”.…

In the beginning most of the Ideas are to farfetched for today’s society but as the book goes on these ideas become more real. Imagine a world that has a drug that was like “lying in bed and taking holiday after holiday, without ever having to come back to a headache or a fit of vomiting” (Huxley 154). Whenever one felt overwhelmed or stressed all one had to do was take the drug called soma. One can have sex with whomever one wants with no emotions attached. Also one has no such thing as parents and one believes in a God named Ford. Ones job consists of working on a machine all day but one never gets bored because they put alcohol in ones brain when one was artificially made.…

Several instances in the novel characters take soma to relieve stress and help them to not think moral thoughts. Lanina had a day of “queerness and horror” so she “swallowed six half- gramme tablets of soma” and “it would be eighteen hours” before she woke(pg.95). Another instance is John the Savage mother who “was dying” by “the soma in her blood”(pg.136). Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a complex novel full of controversy, in a timeline that is both distant and relatable to the reader. In the world that is A.F. 632 life is something to indulge in, acting on one's urges is common, along with overly active sex lives, and constant drug abuse. Individuality has been lost to the past and new lower function human hybrid twins are everywhere. Bernard is representative of the common modern day reader, as he is logical, contemplative, and feels real emotion, unlike his cookie cutter counterparts.…
