“A Blizzard under Blue sky,” written by Pam Houston is a story about a female character who is suffering from depression. As readers may already understand how common depression is, affecting over 350 million people nationwide. In this poem the sufferer decides to cure herself despite her psychologist professional recommendations. Her remedy of healing comes from a more natural resource. The female in the story embarks on this dangerous journey with her two dogs Jackson and Hailey, lacking human companionship, facing this hardship ultimately, alone. The story is set during the winter months in Utah, with temperatures well below zero, -32 to be exact. As she prepares for this adventure she seeks advice from her roommate Alex, who thinks her idea is farfetched. The character states, “I don’t know what you’re going to prove by freezing to death” (Line 24), but carries on to give her his advice. His advice is unbelievable as he claims mixing water and Kool-Aid will prevent the mixture from freezing. This is hard to imagine, as readers surely enjoyed a Kool-Aid Popsicle when they were younger, especially on a hot day. After his advice, the tone is set and it seems the adventure is going to end up a catastrophe. Unfortunately, she still decides to go. On the trip she brings along her two dogs Jackson and Hailey, talking to them, and for them throughout the story. The author does this to help give readers more incite about the characters she created. The protagonist character says, “Some of you know Jackson.”(LINE 37-38) In doing this it makes it seem as though the main character talks to herself, adding more depth to her mental illness. She then carries on describing the dogs, ultimately creating the character as she talks throughout the story. Consequently, readers learn about the characters through the conversations throughout the
