Twilight segued into a blanket of soft obsidian darkness as Allie lay in bed feeling alone and helpless. Outside her door, the city began to come to life as lamplighters lit the gas lamps along the Battery. It was so quiet in the house that she could hear someone several blocks away in the midst of a fracas. They argued back and forth for a few minutes and then became quiet. A little while later, ribald laughter wafted through the streets from the bars and eateries near the wharf, hearing others laughter and happiness only saddened her more. For hours, she lay there wondering, worrying, what if- what if the Yankees caught Thomas, or what if something else happened to him. What if she never saw or heard from him again- could she go on with her life? At that moment in time, she did not know that she could…
When morning came, Allie felt a little more at ease- she had fallen asleep and had a wonderful dream where she was standing at the bow of the Spitfire with Thomas, facing a headwind that blew salty mists into the air covering her face and flowing hair. Upon waking, she saw that the balcony door was open.
In her dream, Thomas held her near and whispered how much he loved her. When she woke, there was a seagull resting on the balcony railing; he was staring at her. Small, round eyes appeared curious as they visually examined her. Taking it as a sign that all was well with Thomas, Allie got up, bathed and dressed for the day; she could not lay around feeling sorry for herself…
