Obsidian is a natural glass comprised of 70% silicon dioxide (SiO₂) that is formed when volcanic lava is rapidly cooled. This cooling happens very quickly and does not allow for significant crystallization within the stone which gives it a smooth and shiny appearance. Occasionally, when Obsidian is forming it has inclusions of small white cristobalite which produce blotchy or snowflake patterns and gives this form of obsidian its name Snowflake Obsidian.
