In colonial America in the seventeenth through the eighteenth century, specifically in the period rooms in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the changing standard of decoration and function of homes reflects the rise of the consumer revolution. Though especially influential in the acquisition of luxury goods, the colonial infatuation with refinement and gentility coincides with the consumer revolution. In fact, a person’s gentility would often be defined by their possession of material goods. While the colonial consumer revolution is characteristic of the eighteenth century, the growing affinity for refinement and the acquisition of goods begins even in the seventeenth century. It was a cold summer night and I could see the sun setting over the lake as I was arranging the lawn chairs around the campfire. I tried to dodge the clouds of gnats as I was running back and forth getting all the cards, snacks, and music ready. Just as I finished I saw the thirty teenagers walking up the long path to the camp directors house ready to participate in an evening activity I planned for them. I watched the girls race to get seats on the lawn chairs and helped the others find seats so they didn’t have to sit on the wet grass. The girls were laughing and having fun…

It has been studied and found that co-sleeping can actually reduce a baby’s risk of SIDS. SIDS is an abbreviation for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Some causes of SIDS could be heavy bedding, smothering, and some babies just stop breathing in their sleep. Studies have shown that when a baby sleeps with his or her mother they feed off the mother’s stimulation, like breathing patterns. When a mother gets into a sleeping routine with her child the smallest things like her heartbeat, breathing, and close presence stimulates the baby to follow all those same patterns.…

Safe Sleep At Home Support of Teaching Topics Healthy People 2020 identify the objective as reducing the rate of all infants’ deaths within one year. Currently the United States is at 6.7 infant deaths per 1,000 live births and the target for 2020 is to decrease the number to 6.0 infants (Healthy People 2020, 2016). Sudden Infant Death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death for infants until the age of one year (Bajanowski et al, n.d.). SIDS is associated with three key factors that Wedgewood describes as the “three hit model” include intrinsic infant vulnerability (birth weight, premature birth, prenatal smoke exposure), death during sleep, and being introduced to an external stressor, like temperature changes (Ball & Russell, 2014).…

Yet co-sleeping is not entirely risk free. While the general act of co-sleeping is not dangerous, there are a variety of factors that can make it dangerous and even life threatening for an infant. In many cases these risks are written too broadly in an attempt to discourage parents from performing co-sleeping in any form. However, explaining to parents the detailed risks of co-sleeping would save more lives than broadly discouraging the behavior entirely, and allows parents to make more informed decisions on how to raise their children. One of the first major risks that can impair co-sleeping and infant health in general is the presence of a smoker, especially if it is the mother herself.…
