The Los Angeles Department of Family Services is one of the biggest child welfare agencies in the United States. The mission statement of DCFS is to service children by maintaining their safety, permanency and access to effective caring services. DCFS has struggled to provide these core values for numerous reasons. Social workers face overwhelming amount of caseloads. The increasing amount of children and families that are assisted by DCFS require provision of multiple services.…
I transported Demarion Tailor and Bureisha L. Williams from their individual placements to be to visit their mother Lashawn Railback. Mrs. Railback arrived on time with snacks for the kids. The child conversed with their mother and the meeting ended amicably. The worker while transporting both clients overheard Demarion saying he didn’t want to return to his foster home. I asked why Demarion didn’t want to return to his foster home.…
Consent will be obtained from both the local department of social services and foster parents for participation in the study. Once consent has been obtained, the foster parents that were chosen to participate will receive a letter with details of the study. The letter will outline why they were chosen, confidentiality, and how to opt in or out of the study.…
First, the case worker should have coordinated preliminary treatment plans for the initial stages of Gabriel’s placements. Here, the worker should have referred foster parents to speak with specialists or attend educational/informational classes on caring for children with unique social, cultural, and behavioral barriers. A class such as this would have been geared toward educating foster parents on identifying common behavioral disturbances, how to respond to future issues, and, importantly, warning signs of suicidal ideations. Plans set forth by the case worker should have also included family therapy sessions to better prepare Gabriel and his foster parents for their transitions in living situation. Next, the case worker should have worked together with the foster parents in collectively coordinating a step-by-step ongoing treatment plan to aid in Gabriel’s recovery, including continued family therapy sessions and weekly reports from the foster parents updating the case worker on Gabriel’s progress, changes in behavior, and/or any concerns that may have arisen.…
Rachel explained that the CSEFEL used in her program looks at 5 different factors in promoting social emotional competence in infants and young children. The 5 factors focus on the promotion, prevention, and interventions. The first is to have an effective workforce or systems that help promote and keep the use of evidence based practices. Then they look at nurturing and responsive relationships to create a safe environment in the development of children. We then move to high quality supportive environments which is evidenced by supportive and responsive relationship between adults to promote heathy development.…
PBIS or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, is an outline of techniques to increase positive behaviors which in turn will enhance academics. PBIS is focused on research based and data driven procedures that rewards students for positive behavior choices. PBIS systems have been researched and improved on since its establishment in the 1980’s. In the 1980’s, researchers at the University of Oregon realized that there was an enormous need for a different behavioral program for children with behavioral disorders.…
Overcrowded homes and understaffed Child Protective Services (CPS) offices has threatened the foster care system in the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex for many years; recently, however, it has proven to be a problem that we can no longer turn a blind eye to. The Dallas News reports that in Dallas ISD alone, there are approximately 3,600 students without homes. They furthers that many children without homes “simply stop going to school and hide on the streets”. With a high demand and a low supply, foster homes in Dallas are severely overcrowded. This has elicited more and more children sleeping in the Child Protective Services offices.…
People assume that foster children are at higher risk for mental health problems and emotional disorder. Children who are in foster care are exposing too many devastating events from the households. According to JoAnne Solchany says “Children who enter foster care face many changes and challenges that can lead to mental health disorders treated with psychotropic medications” (1). However, foster care children are diagnosed and treated for Attention –Deficit Hyperactivity disorder. According to Klein, Damiani-Taraba, Koster, and Campbell “Attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder is characterized by impairment in attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity” (1).…
Foster care and the educational system are complex organizations. Both organizations address and serve children who experience abuse and neglect. Addressing the educational needs of children in foster care presents a unique challenge to schools, social agencies, and foster parents. It is estimated that in 2013 there were approximately 589,000 children and youth in foster care across the United States (Children’s Bureau, 2014). In 2013, 58,699 children in California were living in foster care.…
Introduction to Special Education Making a Difference Seventh Edition states, “In the PBS model, the primary prevention program involves establishing for all key areas. Expectations are clear, concise, and simple (e.g., follow directions, be responsible, be safe, be prepared), with detailed illustrations of how these behaviors look in different settings. Then, students are given opportunities to practice and receive reinforcement for meeting these expectations” (Lewis & Sugai, 1999; Sugai & Horner, 2002). This could help Paul be award of his behavior and how he can improve his serious behavior disorder. The disadvantage is if this program does not help Paul, he might be considered to take part in the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA).…

The movie Precious describes the life of a 16-year-old girl who is illiterate, lives in an abusive home, was raped by her father, and thus has one disabled child and is pregnant with her second. Although Precious was in a horrible situation, with the help of her social worker and her alternative school teacher, Precious escaped from her house and started a new life of her own. As a social work student, I can learn from Precious’s situation by comparing how the social worker in the movie helped Precious versus how I would have, had I been her social worker. By identifying the primary systems that affect Precious, some of her greatest strengths that helped her in overcoming her situation, and four interventions I would have implemented, I can…
Introduction: I am writing my Decision-Making Report over the need of the importance in learning to be able see the early signs of neglected or abused and what do at a child care facility or in a school. My main audience is the State of Texas Education. The reason I will write to this group of audience is because every school, day care facility should know and understand why it’s important to know the symptoms and know what should be done if a child is being neglected or abuse. While convincing the State of Texas Education about the problem with neglect and abuse, I will also talk about 3 possibilities there are for addressing/solving this problem. Audience questions: Neglect and abuse is something that increases every day in life.…
About 75% of children are sexually abused or have been abused in foster care ("Sexual Abuse"). Children who have been sexually abused suffer from health, mental, and social problems. A foster child’s file does not always state that a child is being sexually abused by the foster family. Social workers are unaware of these issues because children are unable to share this disgusting abuse to them or another adult. For these abused foster children, "home" is a now a place they fear abuse and neglect.…
A Broken and Corrupt Foster Marcia R. Lowry, founder and executive director of A Better Childhood, once addressed on how, “It’s likely that these children have been terribly damaged. Now they face the foster care system… so having faced one terrible situation, they might wind up in another”. This is a clear example of how kids in foster care will end in lots of damage during and after the system. Corruption in the foster care system will affect many children psychologically because of the issues and problems they go through every day in a system that is broken. Taking in a child who is not your own because their parents are not capable of doing so has been happening way before having its official name.…
