Año Nuevo is a major celebration that takes place in Spanish speaking countries. On January 1st people gather together to celebrate a new year coming to them. They say goodbye to the past year and what might of happened to them, and at the same time enjoy thinking about what the next year may have in store for them. People spend days and months preparing for the party they throw on this day. Many major cities throw huge parties that the townspeople come to together.
There are many ways that this holiday can be celebrated. Firstly, people can gather with their friends and family. They can spend time together in a familiar home they know. Secondly, they can celebrate by going to one of many town celebrations that are thrown. Here they can celebrate

In some areas people wear masks, make figures that represent government officials, and some make funny poems and messages for the others they are close to. As strange it may sound many people have another tradition on this night. When the countdown begins a tradition does also. Each person is given 12 grapes, when there is only 12 seconds left to midnight you are supposed to try and eat all of the 12 grapes before the clock strikes. Many ask why this is a tradition at a Año Nuevo party? This event dates back 1895, and symbolizes luck in the future. At these parties there is also a lot of food, alcohol, dancing, and music. Firstly, they are similar due to when they are celebrated. Both these holidays are celebrated on December 31st to January 1st in the early morning. Secondly, they are similar due to what they are celebrating. Just like New Year Eve Año Nuevo celebrates the new year and what it might hold. Lastly, the two are alike because what they do at a celebration is very similar to what we do here. At many parties they have they dance, laugh, listen to music, and spend time with their family and friends. As they are gathered around counting down the clock they are anticipating similar to what we do, fireworks. This is very similar to what happens here on the same day. Although the holidays are very similar they are also very different. Firstly, they are different due when and how they were founded. But we do know that a type of New Year's was founded in 2000 B.C in Mesopotamia. Lastly, when the clock finally hits midnight the fireworks are set off at an Año Nuevo party. But in the United States our eyes turn to the giant ball falling out of the sky, with confetti flying everywhere.
