Attention-getter: “911 I need help, I hit someone”. If you do not want to be the one making this call or be in such a situation, then do not text and drive. Do you know how many people have been devastated by making these mistakes? Families have been destroyed; loved ones have passed away because they could not stay off their phone while driving. Almost every day young adults are dying or are in prison because of a cellphone. These situations would be prevented if Texas would prohibit texting and driving for everyone. Relevance: According to Institute for Hwy Safety Fatality Facts, 31 percent of drivers’ ages of 18-25 involved in car wrecks admitted to texting and talking on their mobile device at the time of their crash. Statistics show that there are 11 deaths every day, due to texting and driving. This should concern us because most of us that attend college range from this age group. A community member that was well known to my family passed away at the age of 19 because she made a poor mistake of texting and driving. Her car accident was so major that she died on the spot; the other driver was also injured as well, but is doing fine now. Her family had arranged a funeral and at the funeral I saw in her parents eyes of how devastated and shock they were. This tragic event made me realize that a text is not worth a life.

Preview of Speech: As a result of these horrible effects of texting while driving, Texas should pass a law banning all drivers from texting and driving. First, I will share the problem associated with texting and driving, followed by a solution that Texas should ban all drivers from this ongoing issue and finally, I’ll share the benefits of implementing a new law. My goal is to show that this is a problem and to offer support for a possible solution.

Let me begin with sharing the problems associated with texting and driving.
