As the dark rain clouds lingered overhead and the light breeze turned into a violent wind, I tried to think of an excuse that could get me out of my plans for the night. I had a sick feeling in this pit of my stomach, but I began getting prepared anyhow. Before I got into the shower I heard my phone start to ring.
“Hello?” I said
“Hi David, it is Mark. I just wanted to make sure that you are still coming tonight.”
“Yeah, I will be there,” I answered.
“Okay, see you then.” he said and hung up. As I got out of the shower, I heard a loud “bang!” come from downstairs. “Who is there?” I yelled, with all the confidence I could muster.
After I convinced myself that I was just being paranoid and that the noise must have been a branch knocking against

“Are these the test subjects?” I heard the voice say.
“Yes, father,” I heard Mark
“Mark, what is happening?” I asked, revealing myself from my hiding spot.
Suddenly, the lights in the cellar were turned on and I was temporarily blinded. Once I could see again, I saw that Timmy and Craig had no color left in their faces and looked like they were at death’s door. On the other side of the room I saw an operating table along with medical tools.
“What is this?” I asked Mark.
“Well,” He started to answer “You know how my family really enjoys decorating the house for Halloween?” “My dad thought it would be a good idea to get more realistic decorations this year”
I started laughing and said “Wow, you guys are really good actors” as my heart rate began to stabilize. “You guys almost tricked me,” I added.
“It is not a joke,” Craig blurted out.
“Very funny. You guys can stop pretending to be injured now,” I told them.
As I turned to help Timmy and Craig off of the ground I felt a sharp pain in my sides and I crumpled over onto the floor in pain.
“Mark?” I asked now realizing that it really was not a joke.
“Happy halloween, fellows.” Mark said, closing the cellar door behind him. Leaving Timmy, Craig, and myself incapacitated on the cold cellar

Today Halloween is the second most commercialized and profitable holidays in today’s world, where trick or treating, costumes, and decorations all are apart of some of the favorite things we like to think about with Halloween. Although in Rick Bass’s short story Antlers, the story starts with the town’s annual Halloween party, where the traditions they have are a little less traditional. In the story the party itself holds a very symbolic meaning and has many underlying tones throughout the entire story. The importance of the party being specifically for Halloween is crucial to the story, as a lot would change otherwise. The Halloween party in Antlers is a little different to our own ideas and ideals for the festivities.…

It gets stupidly hot in Danielsville, Louisiana, especially around summer. This would be fine I guess if we had something to do, to keep our mind off of the heat but there isn’t anything to do. Danielsville, Louisiana has three churches (Pentecostal), twice as many bars, one high school and no books stores or libraries. This means you’re either too drunk to read, or too Christian to read anything good. Big enough to have a mayor’s house, but not big enough to be on any map of any kind, it’s the kind of town where everyone knows your name and basically everything about you.…
