Before anyone could answer her, thunder shook the whole house and lightning struck, instantly making the Gallagher family lose power. Frightened, Carl jumps into his father, Frank’s, arms. Frank wraps his arms around him and assures him that the power will come back on shortly, even though he had no idea when it would come back on.
“I’m going to find a flashlight,” Kevin announces to the now pitch-black living room. He cautiously stands up and uses the furniture’s placement to make his way into the kitchen. Veronica and Ian both try to find as many candles as they can with the light on Ian’s phone.
“Debbie, go sit with Dad,” Fiona demands. “I’m going to go look outside and see if there’s any damage.” She walks over to the door and opens it to see a huge tree branch that had fallen on the power line. “Oh, no, this isn’t good.”

Fiona turns to look at him with a confused look. “Let me explain.”
Everyone goes back to where they were sitting before the power outage, and listens to Lip.
“Today someone told me about electric cooperatives,” he continues, “at first I didn’t think much about it, but I did research when I got home and I think that maybe it could help our situation now.”
“Wait, what’s an electric cooperative?” Carl asks.
“Electric cooperatives are businesses that have huge impacts on people’s lives. They give energy for power to anything from cellphones to refrigerators.” Lip states.
“Oh, yeah, I’ve heard about this, too!” Veronica interjects. “They aren’t like other businesses, electric cooperatives are non-for-profit businesses. They’re owned by the customers themselves.”
Frank looks at his daughter Fiona and shrugs his shoulders. “Doesn’t sound too bad to me.”
“Can we even afford something like that?” Debbie asks. “We definitely aren’t the richest people.”
“They are known for selling affordable energy. It shouldn’t be a problem for us.” Lip says.
“Also, they are very reliable. When you’re with them, the power is almost never out.” Veronica
