They never talk about the girls who drown. Sure, there are news reports. They display images of smiling girls in pretty dresses with bold smiles and dreamy eyes. They show a girl who may have existed.

There was the beautiful girl with soft blonde hair. The news anchor may have said her name was Bethany, but does it truly matter? Was anyone truly listening?

'Beauty is pain' her mother would say, mercilessly twisting her daughter's hair into tight coils. Her tears fall with each twist of a pin.

'Your mother would have been able to do this in her sleep. There's no chance you'll ever be captain when you can't even perfect the routine' the coach barked, marking her clipboard endlessly. She counts to ten in her head to calm the ache in her

He does not have a name, barely even has a face anymore, but her heart breaks all the same. She wants to ask if there is anything she had done wrong, but her mouth will not move. She wants to tell him that she gave him everything she had, but her lips seem to be sewn shut. She must have said something because he walked away. Or maybe she said nothing at all and he left anyway.

'It doesn't seem like you're going to be homecoming queen, especially since your date bailed on you. I doubt even your stage mommy can find a dress expensive enough to win you that' one of her cheer mates sneers. She thinks that she would have screamed at one point, would have gave this girl a piece of her mind. But something stops her. Everything stops her. She cannot find the power to care. She cannot find the strength to be angry. She picks up her pom poms and walks away with her back straight, but she cannot stop her knees from quaking.

'Holy shit, I never thought that little miss perfect would ever talk to me.' The boy in a dark hoodie says. She taps her foot impatiently and hands him some of the money that she is supposed to use for her homecoming dress. The pills in her hand feel heavier than she thought they would and her hands shake when she presses them between her lips. The boy watches her the whole time with a smirk, but she does not care. She only wants to go home and sleep. She is so tired. She always seems to be so
