To begin, The planes were taken over by Al-Qaeda. The planes had between 7000-22000 gallons of fuel between the four of them. One of the militants had a knife on board the plane and threatened to stab the pilot in the side if he did not get out of the cockpit. Another militant had a gun and walked into the cockpit and shot one of the pilot's right in the head and drug him out of the cockpit so that he could fly the plane.
