Following the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11, the fire service has undergone a transformation in its response in order to avoid another disaster of this magnitude. The 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City, New York identified new building design and construction concerns due to a terror event. On September 11, 2001, two commercial aircrafts intentionally crashed into the World Trade Center twin towers igniting jet-fuel-fed fires inside the structures. Due to the intense flames impinging on the steel structure the towers collapsed. Three hundred forty-three firefighters died in the collapse.The event revealed the effects of terror attacks on buildings are neither quantifiable nor predictable. This created a new challenge

Steel burn time rating of 2-3 hours should be required for structures over 75ft tall to aid in the safe evacuation of occupant before a structure collapse. If steel beams are restrained, as by a masonry structure, and the temperature of the fire is sustained at around 1,000 degrees, the expansion of the steel may cause the displacement of the masonry, resulting in a partial or total collapse (Corbett & Brannigan, 2015). Next, mandate structures over 75ft are required to provide safe zones (clearly marked) in the event of a collapse on each floor until evacuation or removal can be obtained. I do not believe that design of future buildings can be regulated to such an extent that a specific design feature such as the “tube within a tube” design can be eliminated. Lastly, require building design and construction to protect fire suppression system during an explosion or fire to ensure reliable fire protection features are operational to quick control and extinguish a high-rise fire. Adequate water supply system is required to carry water to the sprinklers so that no one pipe carries all of the water for a floor that would possibly be involved in fire. Damage to the water supply system during the fire event of rendering the system inoperable resulting in intense heat and severe danger to firefighting
