On September 11, 2001, a clear Tuesday morning, four commercial jets were hijacked by members of the Islamic extremist group called Al-Qaeda. They carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States using American Airlines Flights. The first flight hit the World Trade Center’s north tower at 8:50 AM. The second tower was hit 14 minutes later, then the third crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. These attacks caused unbelievable death and destruction, with over 3,000 casualties. This event will be remembered as one of the deadliest days in American history.
There was a total of 19 members of Al-Qaeda who hijacked the planes, all men from Saudi Arabia. This group was led by Osama bin Laden, and under his orders, his followers lived in the United States for a short period of time and took flying lessons in preparation for this event. The extremists sneaked in box-cutters and knives through security, and chose their selected airplanes because they had been loaded with fuel. There were claims made saying their attacks were in retaliation. They had to cope with the loss of their family and friends, similar to Sarah Van Auken . She was the daughter of a 9/11 victim and was quoted saying, “The pain that people feel, specifically the pain that family members feel on the anniversaries, myself included, is very real and very valid. It is not to be taken lightly.” Their pain and suffering were traumatic in all sorts of ways that will follow them for the rest of their lives. Another victim stated that “I will never be normal again. But this is my life now. I have to live with it.” They now must cope with these losses and will never feel the same
