After attending Desert Harbor Elementary School for nine years from kindergarten through eighth grade, I made many great memories as well as gone through some obstacles. As promotion day approached,
May 20, 2015, was the day of my eighth grade promotion. The first thing in the morning after I brushed my teeth and put on a t-shirt and pants, my oldest sister drove me to a nail salon. After I got my manicure, we went back home. My oldest sister curled my hair and did a full face makeover. Honestly, that was very thrilling. I was worried that I would be late. We had to move over to the other parking lot and eventually found one. We then head over to the main entrance. The audience entered the gymnasium to find their seats. Meanwhile, the rest of the 8th graders including myself, headed to the backstage to find our seats. I sat in the front row next to my two awesome friends that we have known each other since first grade. When it was time for the ceremony to begin, our Principal Ms. Berhow delivered an inspirational speech. Three more students also delivered speeches. The speeches were so emotional that it almost made me cry. After that, many awards were given out to outstanding students. I received two awards. One award was for academic. The other award was for leadership. I was extremely proud of myself and my other classmates as well. The most exciting part of this ceremony was when everyone received their promotion certificates. As the names were being called out, each and every one of the students walked down the stairs and shook hands with our principal and other faculty members. Looking across the gymnasium and smiling at the cameras in front of me, I noticed my cousins, aunts, and uncles were there. They were clapping and cheering. I was surprised. I did not think about that they were able to show up. At the same time, my parents and siblings took videos and photos of me. As the principal concluded the

The happiness was apparent in their faces whenever they would see us. The feeling of being a role model to all the kids, just because we were cheerleaders in uniform, is unexplainable. I was absolutely mind boggled by the reactions that I perceived from the stage! I saw my tough and not-so-sensitive dad sobbing, my non-believer friend attentive, and the rest of the congregation worshipping with me. I got my first standing ovation. I was so proud to take it in with my fellow praise team members. Come to find out, by practicing with my team in front of people, we influenced them to ask our praise team leader, “What is so different about these kids?”…

But when she got to mine and another student's award, she said that it was going to “make her cry”. As she called my name though, I felt really accomplished and proud with myself. I worked hard to improve my musical skills and technique that year so getting that award felt really good. After we finished with the awards, the class went into the band room and took some pictures there while we were waiting for the bell to ring. I was a much more awkward person back then so that was weird.…

Growing up in Maine had so many advantages from the beautiful scenery to the unique qualities Mainers have. I can't say that I'm not blessed to have grown up in such a beautifully scenic place, but I can't say it's been easy. I'm originally from land-locked Indiana. I moved to Maine when I was younger with my parents and brother and as much as I love being from a different place it's been hard growing up without a close family in a state so closely tied together with their families. Growing up in Maine, especially Mid-Coast Maine, you know that all of the surrounding families have lived there for generations, everybody knows everybody, cousins go to school together, and siblings work together.…

Near the end of my 8th grade year, my parents told me that my father’s company was shutting down. So when I hear that I was honored as section leader for the season, I was thrilled, ready to share my knowledge with the rest of my section. I was determined to make this season the best one possible.…
