We are gathered here to celebrate the graduating class of 2018. We have finally made it. High school also intimidated me as I made the transformation from “big man on campus” in eighth grade to a young and vulnerable 9th graders. The thought of having new teachers, described by some upperclassmen as “brutal” was also overwhelming. Overall, I had no clue what to expect. My middle school teachers always warned us, “In high school, you are on your own and there is no cushion. Teachers will not hold your hands and help you through every little thing.”…

Although the divorce done me and my mom bad we both knew we needed to start our own new lives. I remember walking into Dolly high for my freshman year and remembering what it feels like to be known as “The New Kid” or “Fresh Meat”. Look at me now, the Cheer captain of the squad, Valedictorian, and joining in on many clubs to make my collage record look professional.…

Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Graduation was a time to celebrate my achievements, to celebrate growing up and maturing into adulthood, to celebrate my friends and family that guided me along the way, and most importantly to celebrate one chapter coming to an end, and another one just beginning. The night before graduation I could hardly sleep as I knew that my high school career would soon be over. I got up that next morning, took a shower, put my makeup on, straightened my hair, and put my favorite black dress on, only this time I had my chords, cap, and gown to go with it.…
