Student athletes often struggle with getting homework assignments completed on game nights. With the 8 Block schedule, student athletes can spend more quality time on their homework rather than competing in a game and then finding time to complete their assignment for the next day. This allows the student to hand in an assignment of better quality. Teachers benefit from this type of schedule as well. Year after year, students at West Islip High School are absolutely distraught when they get their schedules in the summer. This year, as well as previous years, many students had to go to their guidance counselor and change things before the school year even started! Still, others waited until the first day, or even the first week before requesting changes. Some students reported having multiple gym and lunch periods, while others had classes in their schedule that were supposed to be every day, but they only had these classes every other day, making it nearly impossible for them to keep up with their peers. These students had to leave these classes, no matter if they liked the class or not.…

I am able to get involved in class and get one on one time if I don't get something that we are going over. Every teacher makes sure to tell me that there office hours and where to find them if not in the classroom. Personally it helps not having to much people in the class to interrupt the teacher and the teacher has more time to lecture about the topic. And with smaller classes I get to meet people and get to know them better as well as we get to share ideas as a ground and get to discuss things more closely.…

As for the student, they would be able to have more time to ask questions and fully understand the lesson that is taught to them. The block scheduling system creates specific advantages to students as well. For composition courses, the block schedule would give more opportunities to retake the course if the student fails it the first time. There is more opportunity to take classes earlier as there are more slots to fill by the block schedule, instead of the regular schedule. This would then give more space to retake any kind of class that you might have failed.…

Teachers are here to help students succeed in life and I am grateful for their efforts and impacts they have made. I believe a 4x4 block schedule would help reduce stress that teachers face everyday with grading papers, prep, and student behavior. With only 4 classes each day, the passing times are cut in half compared to a traditional schedule resulting in more time in class rather than in the hallways. Teachers overall will only have to teach 3 classes per day and have a 90 minute prep. This means teachers will have less students to teach at one time.…

Failing grades are important; however, getting enough sleep is just as much of a necessity. Ripley stated ¨schools begin before 8 a.m.¨ and then they ¨spend long hours practicing (11). Ripley went on to say that schools start early “despite research showing that later start times improve student performance”(11). All this could be fixed very easily if we just exterminated sports programs. Students need more sleep to perform at their best in school.…

Should schools have balanced schedule or all year round schooling? No, there are many disadvantages to having a balanced calendar. Some of these reasons are it still takes about the same amount of time throughout the year to reteach information forgotten from breaks, it is hard to find a babysitter for short intervals of time rather than a big block of time with a high school student wanting a job, and lastly students having a summer job is almost completely eliminated. The number one reason for school turning away from the balanced schedule is because the main reason they went to them is to reduce the learning curve (summer slide), where student forgot information over their 12 week break.…

Those in opposition of block scheduling argue that specific classes need to held continuously throughout the year in order to reinforce the curriculum. Classes such as mathematics and college level classes are rigorous courses that require extensive focus and practice. As Mark Stern a math professor at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina explains,"It takes more focus to follow something like a math class… It's easier to get people to sit around and talk about Shakespeare for 90 minutes than to teach them how to understand quadratic equations"' ("Block Scheduling in Schools"). Moreover, they indicate AP classes have to thoroughly cover material in order to prepare the AP test in May. The 4x4 schedule presents problems because some courses…

According to the article, "Focus on the School Calendar: The Four-Day School Week" states "State Departments of Education staff says that students do no worse than students on a traditional calendar" which proves that students who have a shorter school week do about the same as students with a longer week (Gaines). The over all results of having a four day week or a five day week are not really any different. In the article, "Top 7 Pros And Cons Of 4 Day School Weeks" research says "attendance of students enrolled in schools that have a four day week shows that attendance is improved as a result" which proves that students come to school most days because they are already getting an extra day to relax and do what they want over the weekend ("Top 7"). Most students do not want to miss school because of the make up work they would have to do from a longer school day. Some students enjoy learning and a longer school day would be beneficial to them overall.…

Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect; well it is a concept that states "small causes can have larger effects". Now this is only a concept, but it makes a lot of sense in the way that if you decide that you want to skip school one day and do something illegal, like drugs, then that tiny decision you made could drastically change your life forever. The smallest decision could have the biggest impact on someone, and in my case, completely change my life. When I decided to make a schedule and set goals for myself each week, i became more positive, less stressed, received better grades, became more organized, and just overall had a healthier mindset.…
