In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven Covey presents 7 different habits which he believes will be essential in becoming prosperous in the endeavors one may have. A significant similarity that all of these habits have is the importance of listening. The ability to listen to not only others around you, but also your personal voice is key when seeking to achieve these habits. The first habit, be proactive, describes the importance of not only knowing what your goals are, but also doing everything possible to achieve them. In order to be proactive in this case, listening is essential simply because one needs to know what needs to be done in order to achieve the goal. Having inter-dialogue, being able to have conversation within yourself, will help you listen and follow your own personal point of view. Any actions that you choose to take will be based on your own perspectives of what you believe to be right. The third habit, put first things first, is centered around prioritizing. In order to achieve your goals, it is important to focus on the factors pushing you toward the end goal before the less important, or smaller, factors. Putting first things first requires listening and paying close attention to your inner thought and being able to reevaluate what you are putting first and last You must be able to know and reason with yourself. Think Win/Win, which is the fourth habit, is centered around the fact that competition is not always necessary and it is more beneficial to find ways to cooperate effectively with other parties. Thinking win/lose creates the mentality that the winner takes all and the loser walks away with nothing.
