Obtaining the ability to listen effectively is one of the most important skills for someone to have. Effective listening can enable great possibility and opportunity in the professional world, because it allows people to genuinely relate to each other. In the novel“7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, author Stephen Covey presents seven habits that have a foundation in effective listening. After reading his work, and understanding the different aspects of listening at a recent lecture by Dr. Magee titled “Listening for Personal and Professional Success”, the relationships between the seven habits and listening have been put into perspective. This plays a huge role in listening to oneself just as the first habit does. Identifying and developing a good mental picture and physically making that picture come to life is an indicator of proper self reflection and comprehension. Again, making listening to one's true purpose a form of effective listening. Habit three delves more into the importance of prioritization and time and life management. When evaluating one’s priorities, it is vital to keep in mind the relevance of those priorities in relation to one's success. This habit also connects to the significance of someone listening and constantly referring to the goals that they have developed for themselves. In a company setting, employees who effectively listen to the goals and missions of a specific company will enable that company to be as successful as it strives to be. Habit three encourages people to identify important values and make those values apart of the foundation of everything that they do.
